Taste of the Kingsway Festival

One of the great things about living in the Humber Bay/Sunnylea area is the close proximity to “The Kingsway” business area.

The Kingsway is located along Bloor Street between Prince Edward Drive to the east and Montgomery Road to the west with Royal York Road in the middle. The Royal York subway station provides easy access to The Kingsway with an exit on Royal York Road and Grenview Avenue.

My neighbour who moved into the Sunny area in the mid-60’s would say” there were a few restaurants and many dress shops”. Over the past 20 years, there have been many changes. The most noticeable change has been the increase in the number of restaurants to the area. The pet store closed and Mr. Greek opened up in its place. Soon to follow was The Green Mango bringing Thai food to the area, Sempre offering Italian cuisine and Merlot offering French cuisine. Many restaurants (Italian, Thai, Indian, Pub fare) opened to the west of Royal York Road.

With all these restaurants, the Kingsway Business Improvement Area association started the Taste of the Kingway Festival (usually the weekend after Labour day in September). Bloor Street is closed to traffic so that over 150,000 people enjoy the food fare of 30 restaurants, listen to great music, go on some rides and learn about the businesses and organizations in our community.
